We do this on Easter Sunday or Monday - it probably should be the Sunday since it's thought to symbolise the stone rolling away from Christ's tomb. Find a good, long grassy hill that's not so steep that small children will fall over following their eggs, but not so gentle that they'll need to push the eggs downhill. Gather the family at the top and roll the decorated eggs down together. Repeat until all the eggs are broken (it can take a surprisingly long time).
There are many variations: you can throw your eggs down, chase them with a stick, run after them and the first down wins, or even use oranges instead of eggs. In the olden days, every bit of eggshell was picked up in case witches used it – as they would hair and nail clippings – to cast spells against the person who rolled the egg. |
