Tinder and Logs

To make a good fire you need the best 'ingredients', fast-catching tinder and slow-burning logs.

When you're building a fire in the garden, it's worth knowing which woods burn well. You can pick these up on a walk through the woods.

The following make good tinder:
Thistledown
Clematis or honeysuckle barks - twist in your hands until you get fine strands like hay
Dead bracken fronds
Dried grass
Silver birch - twigs or the fine paper bark
Cramp ball fungus, also known as King Alfred's cake, grows on ash trees and looks like blobs of black lava. Easy to ignite and hard to put out.

The following are the best long-burning woods:
Ash (burns well green)
Beech
Hawthorn
Holly (burns well green)
Oak
