Hi Nicky,
Yes, this is a red velvet cake popular in the Southern United States and it does contain spooky amounts of red colouring (though I guess you could use colouring from beetroots instead, though I've never tried that). The icing, with a flour and milk roux, is also typical of this kind of cake. and although it sounds yucky, it actually tastes quite good... |

Is this the same as what is known as Red Velvet cake in the US? I've always wanted to try that but been a bit frightened by the huge amount of red colouring which it requires. Your version looks just red enough to be exciting but not spooky. |
